@3 AN EXAMINATION OF MISSING THREADS
@2 =================================
@1
Throughout the existence of Doctor Who there have been many ideas that have
never been properly exploited. One of these is marketing, however this is
not the real context that is being considered. My chief interest is in
both the plot and character of the shows.
Indeed many ideas have recently been corrected in the series of new novels
that are released by Virgin religiously. However it is improtant to note
that these ideas are not taken as cannon by the majority of Who fans
and are likely to be ignored by makers of a new series (in much the same
way that fanzine stories are outdated day after day). The target
exists therefore of creating an entertaining and enjoyable series, but still
giving something that`s new and fresh.
One way in which this has been accomplished is by regeneration. The
Doctor is able to changs his character and appearance in a bid to suit
the audience. However this idea has never fully been exploited by the
producers. The fact that regeneration only seems to occur in stories
that involve the Time Lords, with the exception of the stories that
involve the Doctor`s own regenerations, these of course happen to suit
other arrangements.
The fact is that through regeneration and clever uses of life cycles an
infinite of number of characters with motives that disagree with the
Doctor`s are available. There should never need to be an end for new ideas
and new activities in this way.
Also the Doctor`s goodness and correctness is always empathised. This
should not be so. Everyone makes mistakes, even the central character. If
anything his mistakes should be the most vital, enabling crucial plots to
interfere with the Doctor`s actions. After all there were cases that even
the greatest consultating detective couldn`t solve.
Why should the Doctor always win in the end? After all it just isn`t true.
Wouldn`t it be more interesting to make the Doctor`s success, even in the
log term something of a rarity. It would certainly be a welcome change,
and one that I for one would like to say.
A whole new market is out there in this way.
Another area to consider is the idea of a common thread running through a
number of stories. Sure, this kind of thing has been tried before (the Key
To Time Season springs directly to mind) but on the whole these have
been unsuccessful. This is because the strengths of such ideas have not
been fully exploited.
Why, for example, is there a necessity for stories to be self contained?
And why can several stories not be running simultaneously? A modern day
audience is quite capable of following a story or two at once, after all
several different drama series can be watched and still understood.
In conclusion a new series needs to exploit the strengths of the show, and
not its weaknesses. All those ideas that have never been fully realised
can now be included. Those that have been tried can be done much better.
If previous mistakes are not looked into it`s no wonder why people are
switching off, time, after time, after time.
